Jan Ugahi, means People’s Realization, Awakening & Development. Jan Ugahi had its beginnings in Calconde slum near Margao, the commercial capital town of Goa, in January 1995. The organization was constituted as a Public Charitable Trust under the name Jan Ugahi in March 1997 and registered at Margao under No. 542. We work with street children, children in difficult circumstances, rural and urban poor, domestic workers, victims of abuse, exploitation, domestic violence, etc. Jan Ugahi has been a member of the National Campaign against Child Trafficking, the National CHILDLINE Network/Helpline for children in distress, State NGO Network. Today, Jan Ugahi has a significant number of women-staff who are drawn from constituent community members. These are women who have developed through the outreach and participatory processes that are essential to Jan Ugahi’s program and its firm resolve to carry forward the PME principles of participatory planning-monitoring-evaluation. Some of them started as students of literacy and gradually evolved from learners to learner-teachers to teachers and community social workers.
